My Favorite Painter Is Levitany
Isaac Levitan is perhaps one of the most mysterious and multifaceted Russian landscape painters. His paintings, although realistic, nevertheless are fulfilled with a sense of mystery, and sometimes his canvases are so different from each other that it is difficult to say that they belong the brush of one and the same master. All this fascinates and bewitches me forcing me to admire the creator’s masterpieces tirelessly.
I like the calm muted colors in Levitan’s paintings. It is no coincidence that the artist often created his canvases in the evening or when the weather was cloudy. Good examples of such of his works are «Twilight» and «After the Rain».
The painter devoted many of his paintings to depicting early spring — a time of year when nature is also still in a dormant state («Spring», «March»). Apparently, such a peaceful mood was characteristic of Levitan’s soul. And I am also close to a similar perception of the world.
During my tour around the Russian Museum, I learned that during his life Isaac Ilyich traveled a lot. He especially liked being near the Volga. The artist was greatly inspired by the monasteries located on its banks. After that Levitan created a whole series of spiritualized landscapes: «Quiet Abode», «Evening Bells», «Above Eternal Peace» and others. These paintings have become my favorites works of this artist.
In addition, there was another remarkable period in Levitan’s life when the painter went to Europe and, while staying there he created several unusually bright canvases using impressionists’ techniques («Lake Como», «Spring in Italy», «Italian landscape»). These paintings did not become widely known, but for me they opened the artist from a new side.
By looking at the European works of Levitan, I realized that the painter wasn’t only into melancholic moods and a desire for solitude. While being on the sunny Italian shores, the artist rested and enjoyed life, and now his paintings that are filled with happiness keep delighting the audience.
