My Favorite Writer Is Gogol
Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol is one of the most mysterious figures in Russian literature. His work is filled with mysticism and original grotesque humor. And the writer’s realistic works shock you with their sharpness and merciless courage with which the author makes fun of the sins of his modern society. That is why it is difficult to remain indifferent to the writer’s works and they always provoke a vivid response in my heart.
I like Gogol’s early works, that he created right after he moved to St. Petersburg, not only for the originality of their exciting mystical plots but also for the fact that they show the mores and customs of Gogol’s homeland — Ukraine. These works include, first of all, the stories included in the collection named Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka.
The time when Gogol wrote «The Government Inspector» and «Dead Souls» is also very close to me. In the works of this time period, the writer manages to deftly expose human sins with the help of humor, giving the reader the opportunity to have a good laugh at the meanness, vulgarity and cowardice of corrupt Russian officials and people who worship them.
Gogol’s realistic story «Taras Bulba» made me think about the complexities of a person’s moral choice at the times of war. Thanks to the accuracy that Gogol uses to describe the harsh customs of the Zaporozhye Cossacks, I was able to understand the reasons that pushed the main character to kill his own son, and even felt sympathy for Taras Bulba.
And, finally, Gogol’s works I like most of all are devoted to the topic of a «little man»: «Nose», “The Overcoat», «Nevsky Prospekt». A detailed description of the life, habits and problems of petty Russian officials of that time allowed me to literally dive into their life and feel all their burdens.
